Reflecting on Learning Disability Week 2023

Learning Disability Week highlights the amazing achievements of the 1.5 million people in the UK diagnosed with a learning disability.

With a better understanding of hidden learning disabilities, the number of people diagnosed later in life with Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia continues to grow. And at PayPlan, we've noticed an increase in the number of clients that have disclosed recent diagnoses to us too.

Despite the increasing number of people being diagnosed, the stigma still exists.

Having a learning disability doesn't mean that you can't get a job, have a relationship, or learn new skills. In fact, many people with learning disabilities bring a fresh new perspective to everything they do. Charity Mencap are busting the myths associated with learning disabilities to educate, raise awareness, and smash the stigma – campaigning for a fair society.

A learning disability doesn't mean you can't; it means you can do it differently. And no matter how big or small, we should celebrate every achievement!

For some people, everyday tasks like preparing a meal plan, doing the washing, or managing finances seem easy. But without the right tools, these "simple tasks" can be overwhelming for people with learning difficulties.

There isn't a one size fits all coping strategy, so it's important to find the proper support and try different techniques to see which works best for you. Visit Mencap for their straightforward guides to advice and support
