Providing care to children and young people with mental health problems has been a growing challenge within UK healthcare. The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly escalated this issue into a full-blown crisis.

Data from a 2022 Children Commissioners report shows that one in six children are currently demonstrating a probable mental health disorder, and that access to specialist services is subject to postcode lotteries.

The RCN Foundation has funded a series of projects and research initiatives to answer the mental health needs of children, young people, and the nursing staff who support them.

Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Grants Programme

This three-year programme, launched in March 2022, supports nursing-led interventions that improve care for children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing.

The RCN Foundation is funding the development of an online toolkit of bespoke resources that will support school nurses, health visitors and emergency care nurses to better support mental health and wellbeing among young patients.

The Leathersellers' Charitable Company and RCN Foundation are partnering to provide education grants to non-specialist nurses pursuing postgraduate qualifications in mental health provision. Learn more and apply here.
