Set out below are the details of the financial support available to pre-registration undergraduate nursing and midwifery students across the UK.

Support from your university

Every university has its own hardship fund for students experiencing financial hardship. Find out what's available on gov.uk

Before you look to apply to the Foundation, it is important that you have approached your own university for support. University Student Services provide money advice, and have details of other funding which may be available to you.

In England

Midwifery and nursing undergraduate students in England are eligible for support through the NHS Support Fund. For further information, read the FAQ PDF.

There is also additional support for those experiencing financial hardship called the Exceptional Support Fund. Find out more about applying by downloading this PDF booklet.

In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales

Each country across the UK has its own model of student funding and financial support. The College of Deans have collated financial support options in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Guernsey. Visit the College of Deans funding advice page.

Support with debt

The RCN Foundation have partnered with PayPlan, who provide regulated debt advice and income maximisation advice free of charge.

Exceptional circumstances

The RCN Foundation may be able to provide financial support if you a student in hardship as the result of:

  • having to flee domestic violence; or

  • having to intermit your studies due to ill-health; or

  • experiencing bereavement (loss of a partner that you live with)

and

  • are not eligible for support from your university.
